The iPhone 13 Pro Max is rated IP68. That means it’s water-resistant up to a depth of six metres for 30 minutes. That’s impressive, because 6 metres of water is pretty deep, and 30 minutes is quite a long time for any piece of electronics to be underwater.
But even a brief dunk in the dunny can cause untold damage. We see this exact situation more than you can imagine. An IP68 rating can go right out the window when it comes to real-world scenarios as opposed to lab-tested controlled conditions with brand new devices.
Most important, Apple’s warranty does not cover water damage. If they were that confident in their phone’s ability to keep liquids out it probably would be covered. And worst of all, water damage can literally end your phone’s life.
For a brief exposure to water like getting caught in the rain, or accidentally spilling your drink on it, your iPhone 13 Pro Max will probably shake it off. But in cases where your phone is more seriously exposed to water there are steps that you must take to prevent permanent damage.
STEP ONE – Switch it off and dry it down. If it’s been exposed to the salty seawater, give it a brief rinse off to remove the damaging salt deposits.
STEP TWO – Dry the charging port. Leave your phone to air-dry outside for about 3 to 4 hours in the Sunshine Coast weather.
STEP THREE – DO NOT TURN IT BACK ON
STEP FOUR – Give us a call or bring it in to the shop.
We have an 80 percent success rate in repairing phones that have been submerged in water, or exposed to water damage that would otherwise destroy devices. If you get it to us quickly, the chances of us repairing it increases dramatically.
