The Sunshine Coast of Australia is the land of sun and surf, so the iPhone 13’s dust and water resistance rating of IP68 is handy for beach days. But bear in mind that it’s only water-resistant up to a point, and there’s no guarantee that every phone will last for the rating of 30 minutes and 2 metres in depth.
It’s probably best to not personally test this, because your backyard barbie by the pool falls a bit short of stringent scientific testing lab conditions. Your iPhone MIGHT be able to resist the odd splash and spill, but if it takes a leap into the drink, treat it as though it’s not water-resistant at all.

If you suspect water damage we recommend the following steps.
- Don’t panic.
- Okay, panic a little.
- Turn off the phone immediately and remove any excess water. If it comes into contact with seawater, run it under the tap to remove any salt residue and then shake it off.
- Dry the charging port thoroughly, and don’t plug it in until you are 100% sure that it’s dry. We recommend leaving it outside to air dry for three to four hours or giving it the old hairdryer treatment on medium heat.
- To be safe, don’t turn the phone back on. Rather bring it in for us to diagnose as if the phone has not dried internally, turning it on may cause damage.
